Treatment group

Cosmetic dentistry

Treatments for concerns about the colour, shape or surface of the teeth. More than one option may suit the same concern; which one is right for you is decided at the examination, based on the condition of your teeth.

Choosing

Which one suits me?

A crown requires some reduction of the outer surface of the tooth; whitening does not change the structure of the tooth but only affects its colour. If a tooth has a large filling, a fracture or has had root canal treatment, a crown may be more suitable. For discoloured but otherwise healthy teeth, whitening may be considered first.

At the examination we discuss the condition of your teeth, your gum health and your expectations. The options are explained together with their advantages, disadvantages and timelines; the decision is yours.

Are teeth reduced for a crown?

Yes. For the crown to fit, some of the outer surface of the tooth has to be reduced. How much depends on the type of crown and the condition of the tooth.

Does whitening damage the teeth?

When done under a dentist’s supervision, temporary sensitivity may occur. If there is gum disease, decay or an exposed root surface, these are treated first.

How long does whitening last?

It depends on diet and on tea, coffee and tobacco use. Over time the colour may return to some extent.
